Today we are going to talk about some of the factors that YouTube considers in determining how much money your video is going to make. And it's Thursday, which means it's time for some YouTube Q&A. CaliKim asked and wrote this. "Can you point me to a video that explains what metrics are used to determine payment?" And then on that same comment thread, Harley Pebley asked this. "I have two videos with similar view counts, but the estimated earnings differ by a factor of five. I'm trying to figure out if there's a content related reason for the difference." Well yes, actually there's several factors that go into determining why one video's making one amount of money and the other one is making a lot more, a lot less, even though they have the same amount of views. And there's probably a lot more than this. But today we're going to talk about five of those factors that YouTube considers. Well one, the first thing to consider is the ad type. As you probably already know, YouTube has several different ad units, including in display ads, in video ads, TrueView ads, and standard InStream ads. And advertisers pay different amounts for each of those ad units. So what type of ad is being displayed around your video makes a difference because some pay better than others. Number two, you've got to consider if it's an auction ad or a reserved ad. Reserved video impressions are reserved and sold directly by Google or a third party like your YouTube networking. And they are sold directly to the advertiser. Often this is done with the advertiser wants to guarantee that there's going to be a certain number of impressions that they want to purchase. Or when Google or your YouTube network was to guarantee a CPM and a certain price for x number of views. Like they want to lock that in, that's often done through reserved ads. The auction...
